FSF - Failsafe Filter

FSF Failsafe High Current EMI Filters for High-Reliability Applications

Simplified FSF Circuit

NexTek’s FSF Series Feedthrough Filters are failure-managed, ultra-high-reliability EMI filters designed for demanding high-current DC applications.

The FSF Series uses a dual configured capacitor circuit for dielectric redundancy and improved failure-mode control. This abuse-tolerant internal design helps manage or prevent random failures while in operation, providing a level of reliability beyond standard C-type feedthrough filter capacitor designs.

Built on NexTek’s field-proven COTS filter platform, FSF filters are designed for harsh operating environments where components may be exposed to shock, vibration, temperature extremes and corrosion. The FSF055 Series provides 55A high current filtering in a compact, rugged, bolt-in package.

What Makes FSF Failsafe EMI Filters Different?

FSF Series filters are designed for high-reliability EMI/RFI filtering where failure management is a key system requirement.

Unlike standard single-stage feedthrough filter designs, FSF filters incorporate a dual configured capacitor circuit for dielectric redundancy and improved failure-mode control.

This abuse-tolerant internal design helps manage or prevent random failures while in operation, supporting demanding applications exposed to shock, vibration, temperature extremes, corrosion and other harsh operating conditions.

Key FSF Series technical advantages include:

  • Dual configured capacitor circuit for dielectric redundancy
  • 55A high current DC single line feedthrough filtering
  • DC to >1GHz filtering performance
  • High reliability with MTBF of 66 million hours
  • Operating temperature from -55°C to +125°C
  • Voltage ratings up to 1000VDC
  • Rugged and lightweight bolt-in style package

Applications for FSF High Current EMI Filters

FSF high current EMI filters are well-suited for applications where DC power lines, sensitive electronics, and high-reliability components must withstand demanding electrical, mechanical or environmental conditions.

FAQs

What is a failsafe EMI filter?

A failsafe EMI filter is designed to provide EMI/RFI suppression with added failure-management capability. NexTek’s FSF Series uses a dual configured capacitor circuit to provide dielectric redundancy and improved failure-mode control for high-reliability applications.

How does a redundant EMI filter work?

A redundant EMI filter uses a circuit design that adds dielectric redundancy to help manage the effects of random in-operation failures. In the FSF Series, this dual configured capacitor circuit provides additional failure-mode control beyond standard single-stage feedthrough filter capacitor designs.

What is the difference between FSF and standard feedthrough filters?

Standard C-type feedthrough filters provide compact EMI/RFI filtering for high-current power lines. FSF filters build on that approach with a dual configured capacitor circuit, abuse-tolerant internal design, and built-in redundancy.

What industries use high-reliability EMI filters?

High-reliability EMI filters are used in industries where power systems must continue operating in demanding electrical, mechanical, or environmental conditions. Common applications include automotive systems, aerospace electronics, COTS military platforms, medical equipment, telecommunications infrastructure, and industrial controls.

What voltage ratings are available for FSF filters?

FSF055 Series configurations are available with DC voltage rating codes for 100V, 200V, 500V and 1000V options. Available capacitance values vary by voltage rating, so engineers should review the FSF055 datasheet or contact NexTek to confirm the right voltage and capacitance combination for the application.

Can FSF filters be customized?

Yes. NexTek can design, engineer and manufacture custom EMI filters to suit specific application requirements, including frequency range, current rating, voltage rating, capacitance, operating temperature, mounting configuration and applicable test or compliance needs. If a standard FSF configuration does not fully align with your system, contact NexTek to discuss modified or custom options.
